Restoration in Pottery and Porcelain

This is a quick note on what to look out for in terms of restoration of pottery and porcelain because this has a massive impact on the value of pieces.

The most important aspect of spotting restoration is to know your preferred brand. If you know your poison you will spot colour inconsistencies, incorrect shapes where a piece was remade and incorrect material.

Shades of colour used in particular pieces tend to be consistent so if you look at similar pieces online, the colour should match exactly whether it’s a Doulton figurine or a Moorcroft vase. Sometimes the colour is correct but the technique of restoration is poor and the paint will come off. The finish may also be incorrect; the piece may be glazed to a matt finish but should be glossy.

Depending on the brand that you’re collecting, sizes of items are also often textbook.

Lastly, the sound that the porcelain makes when tapped should be high and clear. If you hear a dull thud, but can’t detect any breaks, your piece has been expertly restored.
